Sebastian, Angus, and Juliet did not speak a word, but they all felt the tension of Celia’s absence. It had been a long time now, too long for anyone to spend holding up her entire body weight with the tips of her fingers and toes. Yet they had heard no shouts of triumph from below, nor had they heard the thud of a falling body. The silence seemed even worse than the scream they all secretly expected at any moment. And so they sat on, not speaking and not knowing.

“There are four of us,” said Sebastian, when he couldn’t stand the quiet any longer.

“Really been working on those math skills, haven’t you,” said Juliet.

“I was just thinking about this old Peruvian legend my mother used to tell me about how the Incan Empire got founded. It was about four brothers—I think they were the children of gods or something.”

“Good, good,” said Angus. “Children of gods, just like us.”

“I just thought—four of them, four of us; both have magical adventures. That’s all.”

“It’s not all,” said Juliet, “I can tell by the look on your face. What happened to them?”

Sebastian was silent for a moment, then answered in a low voice. “One survived and founded the empire, two got turned into stone, and one got trapped in a cave.”

“Trapped in a cave?” said Angus, leaping up. “Are you saying that Celia is going to get trapped down there?”

“No,” said Sebastian. “It just reminded me …”

“Keep your stupid Peruvian stories to yourself from now on,” snapped Angus, turning away so the others wouldn’t see he was crying.
